It’s Human Trafficking Awareness Day!

The 3rd Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Day, slated by President Obama, to take place on January 11th each year, is a monumental day highlighting and engaging America in the issue of Human Trafficking. At SCTNow, we are reminded of the stories of children who’ve been heinously victimized in the sex slave trade.

Mary*: 14 years old was made to work as a waitress to pay off debt bondage. In the evening, she was also forced to sexually serve clients.

Anne*: 12 years old forced by a relative to prostitute herself at a hotel, over and over again.

Christine*: A teenager threatened that her mother would be horribly abused if she did not adhere to her traffickers demands. Christine was sexually exploited and victimized in unimaginable ways.

Mary*, Anne* and Christine’s* innocence was stolen through the crime of human trafficking. Though they were once trapped in a lifestyle of bondage and slavery, thanks to your generous donations and the work of abroad investigative teams, they are now on a new journey of healing, hope and freedom.

Today, on this 3rd Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Day, we remember these children and the countless others who are looking to you and organizations like SCTNow to help fight for their freedom!

*Names changed to protect the innocent.

Alpha Male Advocate

Men tend not to be as involved in social issues as women. Not to say that there aren’t a fair share of men campaigning and championing great causes like stopping child trafficking or ending child pornograhy. But in comparison, women are more vocal and visible on these issues– which is a bit of a let down because men have such a distinct and important role in the fight to end child trafficking

The portrayal of men in today’s culture, the glamorization of the pimp, strip club patronization, male chauvinism being propagated on the internet… these are images of men that perpetuate the crime of sex trafficking.  By simply raising their voice in defiance against this trend, men can change the growing tide in favor of the abolition… and in the process save lives and families.

Sweden began with an experiment. In 1999, the country made the buying of sex a crime but not the selling of it. The definition of a crime in the eyes of the state fell to the DEMAND: the men who bought. And the experiment worked. Sweden’s trafficking cases have fallen dramatically. The percent of Swedish men who buy sex has decreased from 13.6% before the law took affect to 7.9% in 2008, almost a 50% reduction.

Men, you can fight the demand! And we can all win.

More than a statistic

Because of the horrific nature of child sex trafficking, it is easy to lose the individual faces of real children in the midst of the statistics; they are appalling but faceless. It is vitally important to never forget the reason for why we do what we do in this war of counter-trafficking. SCTNow, their operatives, and you, the backbone of support for SCTNow, must always make sure that the individual child is never forgotten to a statistic.

The faces come in every shape, color and size.  6 year old Etan stolen off of SoHo’s streets in New York City as he walked to the school bus one late spring day. The best theory about his fate falls to the convicted child molester, Jose Antonio Ramos.  Brittany was deceived by a man at the local mall.  Instead of working in a restaurant as her lurer promised, she was forced to prostitute herself to 60 men in 3 days at gunpoint before escaping.  Then there is 15 year old “Debbie”, the straight-A student who met her ill fate while meeting a “friend” in her own parent’s driveway.  Instead of ending the conversation on a friendly note, Debbie was pushed into the car and brutally initiated into the sex industry. And then there is Bianca, a young teen offered a chance to get off the Washington D.C. streets for the hidden price of prostitution.

When you are fundraising for the Walk/Run or spreading awareness, don’t get overwhelmed by the statistics and forget why you do what you do; Remember the names of Ethan, Brittany, Debbie, and Bianca…. they are children who have faced an unthinkable fate. SCTNow focuses on preventing and saving innocent children from a life of the unthinkable.
